History in His Own words:
It was at my Manhood ceremony, you know the one where the Elders of the tribe can say in their old all knowing way “you are now a man not a mere boy. You are a warrior of the tribe”, that is when I was given the name Shiriki which is Pawnee for Coyote. Yup Coyote, the trickster.
Why? Well in their infinite wisdom the Elders thought of many aspects of my personality that made them believe I was like the Coyote, one being that I was good at getting other people to do my chores. I wasn’t tricking them I was more like…. bargaining (laugh) Hell so I was good at it…sue me.
Don’t get me wrong, I totally respected the Elders of my tribe, I like my name it fits me. They would know how well if they were to ever find out how I passed my trials. I just persuaded some of my more gullible friends to do most of them for me, and on the vision quest where I had to “tough it out” in the wilderness for a few days, I found out where I was being sent and put some supplies out there, just a few things to make the stay more memorable. Oh I saw visions…trust me…not gonna tell you what exactly was in my supplies but just know I saw Coyote and he was pretty damn proud of me for my…imagination. (laugh)
It was when I had turned 25 years they came. The family of Rom, the gypsies from the east. They came in wagons, but they weren’t like the whites…they were more like my tribe. They were family…and good horse people. They and the tribe took up trade and found some things in common.
The matriarch of the family of Rom was Rose Vitor. Little did I know at the time she was to be my sire. She was a Ravnos. She said she took a liking to me because I reminded her of the son she lost. One night during some festivities between the families she embraced me…and I decided to leave with them, I couldn’t stay with the tribe, they wouldn’t understand what I knew was happening…Coyote just claimed me, this time for real.
I traveled with them for some time learning their ways, which wasn’t all that far fetched from the tribes thinking. Many a time when they would pull a “trade” and we pulled on over on some whites it was especially delicious. (Note: this is one of his quirks – he loves pulling tricks or stealing from ‘whites’)
During WWII The Rom through many contacts learned of the Rom’s fate in Europe in the Nazi concentration camps we helped them as much as we could at that time to come over and join us in America. I have many good contacts from that time.
When computers started up, that too amazed me and I took in as much as I could, because I saw the wondrous advantage the computers could have in relieving the rich of some…burdens. (laugh)
I broke from the family about 50 years ago, don’t know why but they understood it, I needed to leave the blood was making me wander…Rose understood it. I think she still does. But I learned much from her and I am still learning especially from Tirawa (the Great Spirit) and the Coyote, which is always with me.
When I broke from the family, I didn’t go alone. Antoinette came with me as my ghoul. It was Rose’s decision at least I thought that at first then came to find out it was more.
Rose knew when I wanted to leave, hell she probably knew before I did. She said the blood told her it was time. Yet she also told me she didn’t want any of her children to be alone, it wasn’t how her family worked. So she had Antoinette, then a 23 year old dark haired yum on legs come in and feed from me. She would be my ghoul. Rose told me she wasn’t a lowly servant, but much more and I was never to treat her as such. I was to look to her as a friend…
At first I didn’t like it, I thought she would hinder me, slow me down…man was I wrong. She has been my savior many times over. Oh she knows my needs and she keeps at least 2 humans “available” for me. I don’t know what I would do without her.
It was 5 years after we left I found out why she truly came with me. It wasn’t Rose’s idea, it was hers. She admitted she had fallen in love with me. At first she wanted to become like me, but she said, “I didn’t want to give up the sun yet …and I didn’t want to grow old and give you up either. I decided if you could not love me at least we would be family.”
That took me back a few steps but I admitted to her that over those 5 years I had grown fond of her as well. I am sure she loves me much more then I deserve and that I do her. But it is her free choice.
What can I say; she is ...was my friend, my lover, my ally, my sanity, my source…
Now she is dead...and I roam alone
